International Nurses Day 2025

Caring for nurses strengthens economies

Today, we celebrate International Nurses Day (IND) a moment to recognise and thank nurses around the world for the incredible impact they make every single day.

The theme for IND 2025, announced by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), is: “Caring for nurses strengthens economies.”

This powerful message highlights the importance of prioritising the wellbeing of nursing staff.

When nurses are supported, physically, mentally, and emotionally, they are better equipped to deliver the high-quality care that is so vital to the health of our communities and the strength of our healthcare systems.

Nurses face a unique set of challenges, including physical demands, emotional strain, and ethical pressures. It is important we are addressing these challenges with meaningful support.

Not only are we celebrating International Nurses Day, this day also marks Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Florence Nightingale strongly advocated for the wellbeing of nurses. While she is best known for transforming nursing into a respected profession and improving hospital sanitation, she raised awareness of the importance of nurses’ mental, physical, and wellbeing.

It is fitting that this week also marks Mental Health Awareness Week. Together, these observances present an important opportunity to shine a light on the mental health and wellbeing of those who care for us all.

Hallam Medical Chief Nurse Lisa Locker said, “Nurses bring a wealth of experience and knowledge and are an essential part of delivering exceptional care across the country.”

To our incredible team of nurses: thank you. Your compassion, resilience, and dedication are truly appreciated, not just today, but every day.
