RCN Update – Position on Advanced Nursing Practice
The Royal College of Nursing has responded to concerns raised by a recent survey by the British Medical Association (BMA) entitled ‘Preventing doctor substitution’.
The RCN states that advanced nursing practice is delivered by registered nurses with additional expertise across clinical care, education, research, and leadership. Roles such as district nurses, nurse practitioners, and consultant nurses provide specialist, autonomous care within multidisciplinary teams.
The RCN emphasises that advanced nurses are not substitutes for doctors or any other profession. Clear role definitions and public understanding of different healthcare roles are essential.
The RCN will continue to defend advanced nursing practice, with the topic set for discussion at its Annual Congress in May 2026.
At Hallam Medical, we recognise and support the vital contribution of advanced nursing professionals across healthcare services.
